Artist Statement
Self-definition is a central theme in my work. I am always exploring new ways to express myself in different media. The saying “Never knock something until you have tried it,” seems to fit me quite well. I focus on one theme at a time but I constantly change the media until I have exhausted all outlets. It is this compulsive, obsessive, restlessness that drives my artwork.
Just recently I have been introduced to the outstanding work of Kathe Kollwitz. Her handle on emotion and anguish helps drive my own work into new heights. In my charcoal portraits, for instance, I have noticed myself trying to capture the same depth of emotion that Kollwitz does in her lithographs.
Besides charcoal I also work with acrylics, pastels, and bookbinding. “Hands-on” for me means being immersed in the realm of the senses. This is reflected in many of my 3-D books and even in my paintings. Whether it be handling assorted papers with texture, or throwing water balloons at a canvas, my work reflects my need for sensual enlightenment.
